Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety presents differently in every patient, but the common thread is discomfort that will not lift. It can begin in childhood and persist into adult life, or it can arrive suddenly after illness, injury or trauma. Roughly one person in three experiences anxiety on a regular basis, which makes it one of the most common reasons patients seek cannabinoid therapy.
We want to be straightforward about the evidence. Very large numbers of patients report that cannabis controls their anxiety symptoms, and CBD in particular has become widely used for exactly this purpose. The formal clinical trial literature is still catching up with that patient experience. What we can offer is careful physician oversight, honest expectations and a treatment plan that is adjusted based on your response.
What Anxiety Actually Is
At its simplest, anxiety is fear of what has not happened yet. Everyone recognises the version that comes before a dental appointment or a job interview. Clinical anxiety is a different order of experience. It can escalate into full panic attacks, particularly alongside a phobia, a diagnosed disorder or post-traumatic stress.
Symptoms of anxiety and panic frequently include:
- Breathlessness or a sense of not getting enough air
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Exhaustion
- Hot and cold flushes
- Chest pain or tightness
- Nausea
- Numbness, most often in the arms or legs
- Overwhelming fear
- A sense of detachment from your surroundings
Why Anxiety Develops
There is rarely a single cause. Inherited predisposition plays a substantial role. So does environment, whether that is the home, the workplace or school. So do coexisting medical conditions, especially chronic pain and mood disorders, each of which feeds anxiety and is worsened by it in turn.
Chronic Stress and Its Physical Toll
Stress itself is normal and useful. It is the body's built-in response to change, driven by the autonomic nervous system and the fight-or-flight reflex, and it is emotional and physical at once. The problem is duration. Stress sustained over months causes real damage and can develop into insomnia, depression and panic or anxiety attacks. The relationship runs both ways, since existing medical or psychological conditions can themselves produce chronic stress.
Physical signs of long-term stress include stomach pain and digestive upset, insomnia, chest pain, headaches and migraines, low energy and motivation, constipation, nausea, clammy hands, erectile dysfunction, appetite loss, and weight gain or loss.
Emotional signs include irritability and mood swings, a sense of being overwhelmed, a mind that will not switch off, low self-esteem, depression, constant worry, difficulty concentrating and a persistently negative outlook.
Under sustained stress the brain carries elevated cortisol and depleted serotonin. Serotonin governs a great deal of how we think, feel and behave, and prolonged exposure to stress hormones can damage brain cells and impair memory.
The Problem With Conventional Anxiety Medication
Many patients arrive already medicated, and already dealing with a second set of problems created by the treatment: blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, digestive upset, insomnia, nausea and fatigue among them. Managing anxiety should not mean managing side effects on top of it. Cannabinoid therapy has a comparatively narrow side-effect profile, and CBD in particular is not typically associated with these reactions. One important caution: CBD should not be used by patients taking blood thinners, and every Cura Vida patient is screened for interactions before treatment begins.
How Cannabinoids Ease Anxiety
Serotonin, produced by nerve cells, drops during periods of anxiety and depression. Cannabinoids influence that signalling, effectively telling the nervous system it is safe to stand down. Patients commonly report that treatment:
- Slows an elevated heart rate
- Makes physical relaxation possible
- Produces a genuine sense of calm
- Reduces social anxiety
- Lifts accompanying low mood
- Restores a feeling of being grounded and present
- Settles nausea
- Improves sleep
- Releases muscle tension
One widely cited figure is that close to half of patients prescribed CBD for anxiety discontinued their other prescription medications within three to four months. Patients also frequently mention benefits around performance anxiety and public speaking, where cannabinoids appear to affect motivation, creativity and how information is processed.
Beyond mood, treatment for chronic stress often produces knock-on improvements in memory, pain levels, appetite regulation and sleep patterns.
CBD or THC, and How to Choose
This is the single most important decision in an anxiety treatment plan, and it should never be made alone.
CBD, or cannabidiol, is drawn largely from hemp varieties. It is not psychoactive and produces no high. It binds to cannabinoid receptors and supports relaxation without altering perception. For most anxiety patients this is the starting point, and it is the clear choice for anyone who has found THC made their symptoms worse or who simply dislikes feeling intoxicated.
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, comes from the resinous flowers of the cannabis plant and is what produces intoxication. It is therapeutic in its own right, but getting the dose right is genuinely difficult without guidance, and too much can amplify anxiety rather than relieve it. Where THC is appropriate, our physicians determine both the dose and the delivery method.
CBD may also be appropriate for children with anxiety whose parents are reluctant to start pharmaceutical medication. Any paediatric plan is handled with additional caution and full family involvement.
Delivery Methods
Oral oils, capsules, gummies and culinary preparations all deliver relief; the difference lies in onset time and duration rather than effectiveness. Your physician will match the format to your symptom pattern, whether that is steady background anxiety or acute episodes that need faster onset.
