Mental Health Conditions
This page covers depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD and schizophrenia. Anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress each have a dedicated page of their own.
We want to set expectations honestly at the outset. Cannabinoid therapy does not treat serious psychiatric illness on its own, and we would never advise anyone to stop psychiatric care in favour of it. What it can do, for many patients, is reduce symptom burden and improve daily functioning, particularly where conventional medication has failed or has produced side effects the patient cannot live with. Every plan we write is built to sit alongside professional mental health support, not to replace it.

DEPRESSION
What Depression Is
Depression is a mood disorder that changes how you think, feel and behave. Physiologically, serotonin levels fall. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that relays messages between regions of the brain, and it influences mood, appetite, memory, sex drive and pain perception. In depression, serotonin is not reaching where it needs to go and the formation of new brain cells is suppressed.
Everyone experiences it differently. It may last days, weeks or years. It may happen once, or repeatedly following illness, trauma or loss.
Symptoms
Depression is much more than sadness. Watch for:
- Difficulty concentrating
- Trouble recalling detail
- Hopelessness and a sense of worthlessness
- Emptiness
- Anxiety and persistent stress
- Insomnia, or sleeping far too much
- Fatigue
- Irritability and easy frustration
- Loss of interest in hobbies, food and social contact
- Eating too much or too little
- Reduced sex drive
- Loss of energy
- Persistent digestive problems
- Unexplained aches and pains
- Frequent headaches
- Suicidal thoughts
Causes and Consequences
Depression is associated with sustained stress, trauma, bereavement, environment, substance use and underlying medical conditions. Left untreated it tends to deepen, and it carries physical consequences: weight fluctuation, increased heart attack risk and a weakened immune system.
Feeling low at times is part of being human. Feeling that way permanently is not, and it is treatable.
Why Some Patients Look Beyond Antidepressants
Antidepressants help a great many people with severe depression, and for some patients they are exactly the right treatment. For others the side effects create a second problem on top of the first: nausea, appetite loss, reduced libido or erectile dysfunction, anxiety, fatigue, dizziness, weight gain, low energy, blurred vision and insomnia.
If you have worked through several without benefit, it is reasonable to explore an alternative with a clinician who can assess your case properly.
How Cannabinoids Act on Mood
The cannabinoids in medical cannabis are chemically similar to compounds the body already produces. Once absorbed they engage receptors in the brain and support serotonin levels. Patients report improved mood, reduced anxiety and stress, better sleep and clearer thinking. CBD, derived from hemp, contains no THC and produces no intoxication, which makes it the usual starting point for mood disorders.
An Important Safety Warning
Cannabis is not recommended alongside antidepressant medication. Combining it with tricyclics such as imipramine or dothiepin can raise heart rate and blood pressure and may cause confusion, hallucinations or mania. It should be one treatment or the other, never both without medical management.
Cannabis should also not be combined with blood thinners.
If you are currently taking antidepressants, tell us at your first consultation. We will work with you and your prescribing doctor on a safe transition rather than asking you to make changes on your own.

BIPOLAR DISORDER
Living With Bipolar Disorder
Everyone has highs and lows. In bipolar disorder those swings are far more intense and far longer. Depressive phases can run for weeks at a time, bringing feelings of worthlessness, weight loss, difficulty concentrating and marked agitation, and can then give way to weeks of elevated energy and elation. Where a patient falls on the spectrum from mild to severe cycling depends on which type of bipolar disorder they have. Symptoms most often emerge in the teenage years, and treatment is usually lifelong.
A necessary warning: in severe cases bipolar disorder carries a risk of suicidal thinking. Medical cannabis does not treat bipolar disorder, and in severe presentations professional psychiatric help is essential.
Causes
Bipolar disorder has a genetic component, but symptoms are frequently triggered by a major life event, serious injury or a coexisting psychological disorder.
What Cannabinoid Therapy Can Contribute
We will say again that cannabis does not treat the underlying disorder. What patient reports do support is improvement in mood swings, anxiety, stress, depressive episodes and restlessness, with a corresponding lift in day-to-day functioning. The mechanism is the same serotonin pathway described above: keeping serotonin in balance improves mood and reduces feelings of depression and worthlessness.
Where bipolar symptoms follow a brain injury or concussion there is an additional consideration. Cannabis can improve cerebral blood flow, which may support recovery, and it is effective against the headaches that so often follow head injury and drive further agitation.
Research in this area remains limited and dosing is highly individual. This is not a condition to self-medicate.

ADHD
What ADHD Looks Like
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is most often diagnosed in children between four and eleven. There is no cure, though some children outgrow it. Adults still living with symptoms have treatment options, and cannabis is one of them.
ADHD is classified as a mental health disorder and involves both attentional and impulsive symptoms:
- Difficulty sustaining attention, especially when multitasking
- Restlessness
- Poor organisation
- Weak time management
- Unfinished tasks and missed deadlines
- Mood swings
- Forgetfulness
- Low motivation
- Acting or speaking without weighing consequences
- Socially awkward or inappropriate interactions
- Erratic eating habits
- Stress and anxiety
Where It Comes From
The main contributors are genetics, disruption during key developmental windows between roughly two weeks and five years of age, and environment, whether a stressful home, workplace or school.
ADHD reaches well beyond concentration. It complicates relationships, makes holding steady employment harder, and is statistically associated with higher rates of road traffic accidents. It also frequently coexists with mood disorders including bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety.
An Alternative to Stimulant Medication
If Ritalin, Adderall or Concerta have not worked for you, or have left you drowsy, dizzy, anxious, nauseated or dealing with stomach pain and headaches, those reactions are common rather than unusual.
Cannabinoids reach the brain quickly and trigger a release of dopamine. As dopamine rises, mood and relaxation tend to improve, and many patients describe feeling more productive and finally able to finish tasks that had been stalling.
We should be direct about the evidence base here: formal research on cannabis for ADHD is thin, and much of what circulates is patient testimony rather than trial data. Duration of effect varies considerably between individuals. We treat ADHD patients with that uncertainty made explicit.
Cigarettes and ADHD
Teenagers and adults with ADHD smoke at higher rates than the general population and find quitting harder. Nicotine does deliver short-term calm and focus, but it also increases hyperactivity and anxiety and undermines memory and motivation, on top of the physical harm of smoking. A prescribed, measured cannabinoid preparation is a considerably better proposition than a cigarette habit.

SCHIZOPHRENIA
What Schizophrenia Involves
Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that alters behaviour, thought, self-expression and the perception of reality, and it can make distinguishing reality from hallucination genuinely difficult. It commonly disrupts school, work and relationships, and it requires lifelong treatment. Its cause is still unknown, though it clearly originates in the brain and involves changes to dopamine and serotonin levels and to neurotransmitter function across several regions.
Early Signs
Symptoms often begin in adolescence and can be difficult to distinguish from other conditions:
- A marked decline in academic performance
- Difficulty concentrating
- Loss of motivation
- Anxiety
- Withdrawal from friends and family
- Mood swings, irritability, anger and depression
- Disordered speech that does not follow logically
- Suicidal thoughts
- Reported hallucinations
- A sense of being watched
In adults between twenty and thirty the picture is similar, with additional warning signs including neglect of personal hygiene, difficulty expressing emotion appropriately, both insomnia and oversleeping, repetition of words or phrases, blank staring, and delusions and hallucinations.
The CBD Research
Antipsychotic medication frequently produces dizziness, fatigue and appetite loss. Cannabinoid therapy has a different profile and can improve mood, support physical relaxation and help patients maintain weight.
On the core symptoms, the most relevant work comes from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience in London, where eighty-eight patients with schizophrenia were treated with CBD over six weeks and showed significant improvement in psychosis symptoms.
This is an area demanding real caution. CBD and THC behave very differently in psychosis, and THC-dominant products are generally inappropriate here. Cura Vida will only treat patients with a diagnosed psychotic disorder in coordination with their treating psychiatrist.
